Chiropractic addresses the relationship between your spine and nervous system and how this affects your overall health. Your nervous system is central to all of your bodily functions. It consists of your brain, spinal cord and the nerves that branch out to every part of your body. It is covered by a tough flexible sheath called the Dura Mater, which fixes the brain and spinal cord in place to the inside of the skull at the top, and to the tailbone at the bottom.
Any misalignment of your spine (called a 'vertebral subluxation') can interfere with the messages carried by your spinal nerves to specific parts of your body. Misalignments of spinal joints can be caused by physical, chemical or emotional stressors*- usually a combination of all three.
The resultant restriction in movement causes tension through the Dura, thus causing compensations of increased/ deacreased movement in other parts of the body. This change in movement and increase in tension can impact grealty upon the functioning of all the muscles, tissues, organs and systems of your body - not just your back!
Put simply, an unhealthy spine can lead to an unhealthy nervous system which can lead to an unhealthy body.
Chiropractic care can assist with the discomfort associated with back pain, hip pain, headaches (including migraines), and many other symptoms.
People of all ages can benefit from Chiropractic care - from newborn babies to adults of any age. There are many different chiropractic techniques to cater for all body shapes, sizes, sensitivities. The techniques our chiropractors may use are listed on our Services & Fees page.
*Physical stressors can include car/ bike accidents, sporting injuries, the birth process (particularly if laying on your back for the birth), and most commonly prolonged poor postures or repetitive movements (such as driving for long periods, carrying heavy handbags/ school bags on one shoulder and slouching at your school or office desk).
Chemical stressors can include cleaning chemicals in your home, and environmental pollutants, but are more often the kind of foods we eat like highly processed and refined foods (e.g. soft drinks, chocolate, fast foods etc), and toxins from smoking.
Emotional stressors can include work/ school stress, personal upsets, and life changes.
