Naturopathy and Your Immune System
Your immune system is one of the most complex systems on the planet! It is highly evolved and able to cope with an amazing diversity of challenges. The problem is, however, that the amount of stuff your immune system has to deal with is increasing.
Despite our focus on cleanliness, our world is not becoming cleaner, but is changing rapidly with new toxins and chemicals introduced every day. The fact that many immune disorders and allergies are increasing is hardly surprising.
Hence when the winter bugs invade, our immune system is often very busy or even overloaded doing other tasks. The tools we give it - the nutrients from our food - are also often compromised due to the declining quality of our food chain, or by our food choice habits, or even by poor gut health which reduces our ability to actually absorb the foods, fluids and supplements we put in.
We tend to think of the immune system as something that's active in the bloodstream – blood tests to reveal white blood cell count or to measure what kind of antibodies we are generating … but in fact much of the work done by the immune system happens in the tissues of the intestinal tract.
White blood cells line your digestive tract, their job being to find and destroy bacteria and pathogens. Much of your immune system is based on how well your digestive tract is functioning. If your digestive system is clogged and sluggish, it will therefore affect the ability of the white blood cells to do their job. We've all seen how winter bugs affect some and not others, even though everyone has been exposed to the bugs.
The good news is that Natural Preventative health can restore your system so that your immunity functions better enabling it to fight infection off completely, or to fight it faster so that the intensity and duration are shortened.
Our Naturopath Leela Holland has a special interest in gut immunity and preventative health. She would love to see you before winter to start building your immune system now. However if you do get the dreaded lurgie, she will be able to help you get over it as quickly as possible without the side effects of medication, and to start you on the path of long term health improvement.
